Aquaknights Newsletter August 2007 1/3
Coaching Comments.
I have managed to make contact with most of the coaches and swimmers in the three regions over the last two months and it was pleasing to see so many of our Aquaknights at the Bay of Plenty Winter Short Course Championships.
There were 14 swimmers who stepped up to the 650 points at the meet and another group just a matter of a few points off 650. The focus now shifts to the Spring Meet in Wellington where I am expecting to see an improvement from those on 650, working their way towards the 700 points and the National Youth Programme and most importantly I want more Aquaknights achieving 650.
The qualifying criteria is 650 points for the Aquaknights Camp in Taupo (Olympic events only) the last opportunity to qualify is the Spring Meet and swimmers wanting to attend the camp must notify Bronwyn Radford by the last session at the Spring Meet. In my last National Youth and Distance newsletter I wrote about what it takes to reach a particular qualifying standard or time. Many of our swimmers reach a point in their careers when taking that next step seems to be out of reach or within reach, but do not know how to get there.
There is one certainty in life, there is no soft option to being successful, so don’t go down that path – it will become a distraction and you won’t achieve what you want. Putting that bit of philosophy into a swimming context – to take that next step, you need to make changes, if you are stuck, then don’t keep doing the same old things, change, maybe you and your coach have to change your approach to training, more sessions, harder sets, improve technique all these and other areas of change require an element of risk taking.
“Conservative efforts will get you conservative results. Courage and daring will bring the big reward – Take a risk!”
– That’s what it is going to take at this years Spring Meet. I want to see Aquaknights stepping up on the blocks ready to take a risk! And go for the 650 + points. I must mention one area that stood out at the Bay winter meet that could be changed – it was finishes, these were very poor. It was not only at the meet I have observed this, I have seen swimmers gliding in to the wall at all training sessions I have visited over the last few months, those elusive points you need could easily be tied up in your finish. Over the next three weeks, work on finishes. In freestyle and backstroke, finish on the long axis (on the side, not having your shoulders square to the wall. Fly and breaststroke work out your finish from the 5m – you should know exactly what number of strokes and stroke adjustment you have to make to hit the wall cleanly.
I am back on the pool deck again covering the Bay Swim programme. I will take these swimmers through to the Spring Meet. This does not mean however that I am not accessible to the Aquaknight programme. I want you to come up and let me know how you have swum, coaches and swimmers – We should all be seated together and ready to support one another.
I would like coaches to send me their entries for the Spring Meet, with the swimmers best time for short course (not converted long course if this happens to be their entry time) Entry times should not be converted times!
Make the most of the next three weeks in the training pool and I look forward to seeing you in Wellington.

Bay of Plenty
New Zealand Team – Kane Radford was a member of the SNZ Youth Development Squad 3 Meet American Tour June-July 2007 with Clive Power the Team Coach. At the 2007 South California June Age Group Invitational Kane took out two first places in 800 and 1500 free plus a member of the 400medley relay, and second places for 200fr, 400fr, 400IM, in both the 200m relays and 400fr relay. Kane swam an outstanding 1500m breaking the New Zealand Record by over 8 seconds in a time of 15:38.39. He then joined Coach Rose’s Mission Veijo Swim Team for a month’s training which concluded with another swim meet where he swam under the 4minute mark for the 400m freestyle. Awesome results Kane and Clive – well done from all of the Aquaknights.
