Kane Radford wins prestigious open water event
Friday 18th September, 2009

Rotorua swimmer Kane Radford has taken out one of the most competitive and prestigious open water events in the world in San Francisco yesterday. The 18 year old Rotorua swimmer, currently based at Mission Viejo in California, won the Tiburon Mile, an annual open water swim from Angel Island in San Francisco Bay to the town of Tiburon. In doing so the teenager beat off the challenge from defending champion and world 25km silver medallist Trent Grimsey (Australia), two-time winner and world 10km champion Vladimir Dyatchin (Russia) and Olympic gold medallist Ous Mellouli (Tunisia). Radford took control from the start to win.

"He chose the best course in the strong tide and cool waters of San Francisco Bay to win in 22:13, holding off the Australian Grimsey who was just five seconds behind.

I tried to go all out right from the start. I was confident in my line. I saw Trent over to my left and was grateful that I had the best line. It’s a great way to start the season."

Radford has been training with the Mission Viejo Nadadores swim team this year.

The women’s race went to Australia’s open water world champion Melissa Gorman ahead of Americans Eva Fabian and Chloe Sutton.
